Pallet is a platform for facilitating the loading and unloading of goods, transport, storage and distribution, and also an cargo board of forklift. It is the most inconspicuous tool but a very common one in the logistics industry and the main means of turning the goods from static to dynamic state. Though it is only one square meter in size, it “moves the whole earth"! It is also called "active ground", “moving platform."
The role of pallet in logistics is obvious to see. In real life, using pallet for transportation can effectively reduce the labor and cost, of course, the most important thing is that it greatly improves the speed of conveying, and can effectively prevent the goods from damage, and so on.

“Pallet-based operation”
Using manpower to load and unload the corrugated box or bags of goods into trucks or containers one by one is called hand loading and unloading. The other way is taking 50 or 100 corrugated boxes or bags as a unit, it is first piled up on the pallet, and then you use the forklift to load the pallet to the platform for the delivery. This kind of transport is called “pallet-based operation transport system.” In developed countries, pallet-based loading and unloading is taken as the basic operation for transportation. In transport, it is bound to have the loading and unloading operation before and after. Comparing with the traditional manual handling operations, the labor and time required with the use of pallets is only one-tenth of the former, that is to say, one forklift driver takes 10 persons'work.

Wooden pallet
Wooden pallet is a widely used in the field of storage, turnover and transportation. It is in low cost, easy and flexible to use, firm and durable.
Note: To many countries, wood en pallets for export should be fumigated.

Plastic pallet
It is made of PE/PP thermo-plastic, together with some additives, through injection molding, blow molding and other processing. Comparing with the wooden pallet, it is clean, easy washing and disinfecting, no barded nail or mildew, anti-acid. It has a good property in whole,. Its service lifetime is 5-7 times that of the wooden pallet. In addition, it meets the requirements of environmental protection. The material of used pallets can be recycled for use again.

Paper pallet
It is made of corrugated or honeycomb paperboard, light in weight, owns very good compression resistance strength, deflection-resistant, drop-resistant strength.
It has obvious advantages for export: no need for quarantine, free of fumigation, environmentally friendly. For its average weight of 1.6-1.7kg comparing with 15-20kg of wooden pallets, it is remarkably economic for air transport in particular. |

Plywood pallet
Plywood pallet is firm and durable, applicable to packaging for heavy loading of goods. The plywood surface is smooth, clean, and hard to absorb moisture. The other main characteristic is light but strong.

Steel pallet
It is made of high-quality and special metal materials, combined with the panel and the outrigger. It is beautiful-shaped, firm and durable, no need maintenance.
Panel crisscrossed with liner rebar makes it more superior in the load bearing capacity, and the outriggers were intensifying-treated to deal with the load equally; the surface treatment with zinc or electrostatic spray make it easy to be cleaned but not easy to get polluted.

Wood-plastic pallet
Being made of wood-plastic material, it is high-strengthened, anti-acid, corrosion-resistant, non-aging, anti-absorbent, virus-resistant (fumigation-free),moisture-proof, mildew-proof, anti-static, flame retardant, non-toxic, non-slip, etc. It solves the wooden pallet’s weaknesses of poor cleanliness, high cost, fragile, short life, and also the plastic pallet‘s shortcomings of poor rigidity, high cost, small flexibility in specs, etc. Moreover, it can be saw, planed and nailed. |
Advantage comparison among all kinds of pallets:
* In corrosion resistance, plastic pallet is the best; wood-plastic the second; steel pallet the worst.
* In wet-resistance, plastic pallet presents the highest performance of all.
* In moth-resistance, steel pallet plays the best, and plastic pallet takes second place.
* In average life, steel pallet and plastic pallet are at the same level.
* In weight, paper and wooden pallets possess an advantage.
* In bearing load, steel pallet performs the best, paper pallet is the weakest.
* In service performance, steel and plastic pallets are superior to paper and wooden pallets.
* In price, wooden pallet is lowest, paper and wood-plastic pallets are the second, steel pallet is the most expensive.
However, according to different application, some kinds of pallets are hard to be replaced. For example, steel pallet is irreplaceable when carrying heavy load. In overall view, plastic, wood-plastic and paper pallets are more promising products, and among them plastic pallet is the most. |
Tip 1: History and current situation of the pallet
In 1930s'Pacific War, the U.S. army for the first time used pallets for improving the efficiency of cargo handling to ensure their logistics supplies. After that, pallets were widely used around the world, and considered as one of two key innovations in the logistics industry in 20th century. Currently in the United States, 80% of merchandise trade is carried with pallets. In Europe each year there are 0.28 billion pallets in the business-to-business cycle. In China, there are about 0.1 billion pallets, of which 90% are wooden pallets, only 8% plastic pallets can be recycled. As there is no uniform standard of specification and lack of shared system, most of pallets are for business internal use. Nowadays, China's rapid expanding of logistics scale results in a total annual of 20 millions pallets in amount.

Tip 2: fumigation problem
Though wooden pallet is lower in cost, the likely hidden eggs of insects carried by pallets will break the ecological balance in the imported country, which can cause biological invasion. Exports (imports) in some countries must be carried out fumigation and pest treatment beforehand. Fumigation must be done in fix-point units and the relevant proof is to be issued. We suggest you use fumigation-free pallets, for its simpler customs declaration of it. As fumigation treatment takes time, to save time, some fumigation-free pallets, such as plastic, paper, high-density material pallets are preferable by some exporters.
